OAK TREE SEND UNIT CURRICULUM
At Oak Tree, our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of pupils within our Communication and Interaction SEND Unit. All children within our setting experience significant and complex needs in communication, interaction, and social understanding. As a result, we recognise that learning extends far beyond traditional academic outcomes and must be rooted in developing each child’s ability to communicate, connect, and engage meaningfully with the world around them.
The curriculum taught within the setting is adapted and designed to support each child’s individual targets and provision, as detailed in their Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP). We take a highly personalised approach, ensuring that learning is meaningful, accessible, and tailored to meet the unique developmental profile of every pupil.
Our curriculum places communication at its core. We prioritise the development of functional, expressive, and receptive communication skills using a range of approaches tailored to individual needs. These may include speech, symbols, visual supports, assistive technology, and alternative communication systems. Equally important is the development of social interaction skills, helping pupils to build relationships, understand social cues, and participate in shared experiences.
For children of Reception age, our curriculum follows Birth to 5 Matters, carefully adapted to both challenge and support the developmental range each child is accessing. For pupils in Year 1 and above, learning is linked to the National Curriculum; however, we use the Ascent Assessment Tracker (AAT) to adapt teaching and learning to meet the specific needs of each individual. This ensures that progress is accurately measured and that teaching remains responsive and appropriate.
We adopt a flexible, structured approach that supports consistency while allowing for individual variation. Through predictable routines, clear expectations, and a supportive environment, we aim to reduce barriers to learning and promote independence, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.
While academic learning is important, it is carefully adapted and delivered in a way that is purposeful and engaging. At Oak Tree, we understand that progress looks different for every child, and success is measured not only through attainment, but through growth in communication, engagement, and independence.
At Oak Tree, we are committed to creating a nurturing, inclusive environment where every pupil is supported to reach their full potential and develop the essential skills they need for life beyond the classroom.
